Rae,

I did 35 races last year (even though I missed most of June/July with a strained calf). My first race of this year (actually I may do 3 in one weekend) is the weekend of February 9-10. There are 2 two mile races and a 4 mile (Winter Winds) races here locally that I'll probably do. I will also do a 10 mile race and a half-marathon trail race in March to get things really kicked off. I also direct a local race in June, the Alabama A&M 10K.

Have you tried jumping rope? It will actually burn more calories than running, but you probably can't do it as long (at least at first). It also works on your fast twitch muscles which will make you faster when you do run. It's not too early to start really getting serious about your '09 half-marathon. You monthly mileage goal for this month should wind up being your weekly mileage goal by the end of the year. You need to gradually increase you distance and speed week by week, letting your body adjust to the new stress.

I can not jump rope. My knees will not tolerate that. I tried to jump rope back in August and I ended up going to the docs and he said no jumping rope.{left knee is bone on bone}
I have been working on mild stairs.I am up to 3.5 miles in 49 minutes. the longs jog/walk is 8 miles and I have made it to 1:58. I went from 2:14.I will be in a 5k in Feb.this month I just can't make it.
I just asked since you haven't mentioned any races.Great.:)

Do you have access to a pool? When I had my last knee scoped (and during all following injuries) I did deep water running in the pool. You put the "floaty" belt on and go to the deep end where you can't touch bottom. Then I use my running motion (you won't go very fast) and go to the mid point of the pool, then turn around and go back. I try to do 30 minutes (usually 30-40 laps). VERY tiring. You can also do speedwork this way - you can give all out effort and you will get just as tired and winded as you'd be on the track - without all the pounding.
